OTHER UN MESSAGES ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD WATER DAY 2002 |
United Nations Development Programme - UNDP: "The prospect for sustainable development looks bleak if we are not able to develop and manage our increasingly scarce water resources in a sound and effective manner. The pollution of and competition for increasingly precious water resources have intensified dramatically over the past decades, reaching a point where water shortages, water quality degradation and aquatic ecosystem destruction are seriously affecting prospects for economic and social development, political stability, as well as ecosystem integrity."
World Meteorological Organization - WMO: "Human health and social development depend on freshwater supplies being adequate in both quantity and quality for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. If we consider that world-wide about 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and that contaminated drinking water and inadequate water supplies account for 10% of all disease in developing countries, it is clear that much remains to be done. One requirement is to identify adequate supplies of potable water."
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe - UNECE: "This year World Day for Water focuses on water for development. Worldwide, some 2.4 billion people still lack access to basic sanitation and 1.2 billion, or one in five, lack safe drinking water. In Europe alone, 120 million people, i.e. one in seven of the population, do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. At the same time precious water continues to be wasted and polluted."
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific- UNESCAP: "The UNESCAP is mandated to mark the annual World Day of Water, first instituted following the "Rio" Conference on Sustainable Development in 1992. This year, in the run up to the Johannesburg Summit 2002 or World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) on 26 August - 4 September, Johannesburg, South Africa,-- the World Water Day is especially significant."
