Summary:
The Champions of the Earth Award is a new international environment award established in 2004, which will be presented each year by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to 6 outstanding environmental achievers and leaders—one from each region of the world.

Selection Criteria: UNEP invites nominations from individuals or groups who have made a significant and recognized contribution globally, regionally or locally, to the protection and sustainable management of the Earth’s environment and natural resources.

Candidates will be rewarded for their creativity, vision and leadership, and the potential of their work and ideas to be replicated across the globe.

The 6 Champions of the Earth will be invited to accept their award at an international award ceremony. The annual ceremony will publicize and encourage the worldwide replication of the achievements of the Champions of the Earth.
