Summary:
Contaminated sediments are of growing concern internationally. As the environmental movement has matured, significant progress has been made in making surface waters, groundwater, soils, and industry wastestreams cleaner. However, the sediments in many bodies of water remain contaminated as the result of past contaminant disposal. These sediments can be long-term sources of contamination, but remedial options often are limited. In some cases, the most effective approach to protecting the environment is to manage sediments carefully, using a combination of monitored natural recovery and dredging restricted to that necessary for navigational purposes. Where more extensive dredging is necessary, containment or impoundment usually is the treatment of choice, but some situations require much more elaborate and expensive treatment. Emerging technologies promise lower costs and, in some cases, will make in situ treatment possible. At the same time, commercial processes for contaminated sediment reclamation and reuse are becoming available.
To aid in the exchange of information on this important environmental and harbor management topic, Battelle-Geneva Research Centre and Azienda Multiservizi Ambientali Veneziana (AMAV) are organizing the International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments.
