Summary:
Participants in this course will receive an overview about the structure and functioning of tropical river and lake ecosystems and will be trained to apply adequate methods to identify/quantify major biological processes and components in tropical streams/rivers and lakes. Encouraged will be a critical look on methodological issues, data interpretation and linkages with underlying theoretical concepts. Activities and processes in the watershed are to be investigated, and their influence on the ecology of river and lake ecosystems and ecosystem services will be assessed. Ecological deficits, potential rehabilitation measures, suitable monitoring programmes and sustainable ecosystem management practices will be discussed.
