From 2006-10-26 to 2006-10-27
Venue: Santiago, Chile
Summary:
In some areas of Chile, water scarcity is such that, according to indicators established by the United Nations, they are ‘endangered’. Between Santiago and Chile’s northern border, water availability per capita is under 1,000 m3 per year, almost 7 times less than the global average. All aspects of human development are hindered by water scarcity, from the quality of human life to potential economic improvements.
This sessions aim to raise the scientific world’s awareness of the importance of water for the development of arid and semi-arid zones in Chile, and to propose innovative action strategies for better water management in arid and semi-arid zones.
Organizers: Chilean National Committee (Conaphi-Chile) for the UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP); Centre of Arid and Semi-Arid Zones of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAZALAC); Talca University, Chile; General Water Directorate, Chile
