From 2002-05-12 to 2002-05-17
Venue: Darwin, Australia
Summary:
Sustainable management of a groundwater resource requires knowledge of the amount of water entering and leaving that resource. Only then can the resource be budgeted to the various parts of society that are bidding for an allocation. This budgeting process has gained a higher profile in recent times as the need to allocate water for the environment has been given the recognition that it has long deserved. A balanced budget is the goal for all groundwater managers. This conference aims to examine how this goal is being met.
Challenges to be addressed by the conference include:
- resource quantification (recharge, storage, discharge);
- tools used for evaluating sustainable yield;
- resource quality determination;
- ecosystem dependence on groundwater;
- groundwater/surface water interaction;
- groundwater management plans;
- community involvement/education;
- estuarine/coastal discharge processes;
- artificial recharge for water supply banking.
