Summary:

Communication across the engineering/science - policy/management interface is difficult. The realization of the uncertainty and ignorance associated with predictions on which to base policies have made the communication even more difficult. The symposium will address the philosophy, approaches and scientific tools associated with the analysis and communication of uncertainty and ignorance to decisions makers.

All issues of significance to understanding and dealing with uncertainty and the Precautionary Principle in relation to environmental management are of interest to the Symposium. There will be coordinated focus on at least the following subject areas:

· Integrated environmental assessment/management
· Water management issues
· Chemicals in the environment
