Summary:
River-basin planning and management is central to the European Water Framework Directive. The EWFD requires progressive protection and enhancement of rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and wetlands by 2015, so that water use be sustainable. The conference focuses on the fresh water components of the directive, reviews progress to date, shares experiences and identifies possible future issues that may arise as the EWFD is progressively implemented.
