Summary:
In order to improve groundwater management within the context of IWRM in arid and semi-arid countries in order to enhance the appropriate protection and use of such resources and to strengthen the capacity of professionals working across water sectors, the workshop will:
• depict current groundwater management practices/pitfalls and usage patterns, focusing on cases and country examples in countries with arid/semi-arid climates
• summarize trends/innovations to develop, monitor and protect groundwater resources in both national and transboundary aquifer/basin settings
• consider alternatives/strategies to meet societal demands, reduce risk, enhance awareness for renewable as well as non-renewable groundwater resources
• identify steps to sustainability for groundwater resources in country specifically aquifer settings integrating ecosystems, economics/finance, laws/regulations, institutions and society.
