The GMP is a joint United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) project that will demonstrate ways of overcoming barriers to the adoption of best practices and pollution prevention measures that limit the mercury (Hg) contamination of international waters from artisanal and small-scale gold mining.

It concentrates on building capacity in industrial service institutions to undertake seven analytical assessments, which together identify the least costly option for environmental compliance.
