The institute, established in 1953, is the research institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The main research activities are directed to surface, soil and groundwater hydrology. It includes departments of Mountain Hydrology, Lowland Hydrology, Soil Physics, and Interactions Between Surface Channels and Groundwater.
