The World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), founded in 2000, is the flagship programme of
UN-Water. Housed in
UNESCO, WWAP monitors freshwater issues in order to provide recommendations, develop case studies, enhance assessment capacity at a national level and inform the decision-making process. Its primary product, the
World Water Development Report (WWDR), is a periodic, comprehensive review providing an authoritative picture of the state of the world’s freshwater resources.

In an ongoing effort to make the United Nations World Water Development Report more relevant to all of its target audiences, the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) is carrying out regular consultations with stakeholders from all fields to identify specific needs or issues and emerging challenge areas.
We invite you to register yourself or others from your network who may be interested in the consultation process. (This will only take a few short minutes!) Those who register will be invited to participate in short, targeted surveys during preparation of the fourth edition of the World Water Development Report.

WWAP and UN-Habitat have released a joint Briefing Note 'Water for sustainable urban human settlements' highlighting critical water challenges related to today's unprecedented urban expansion – from providing access to basic services to ensuring environmental and human security. The paper, produced 16 June 2010, provides urban mayors, leaders and high-level decision makers with concrete policy options to meet these challenges, protect against potential water-related disasters and ensure the development of sustainable urban settlements.

Launch of the Millennium Development Goals Report 2010
First agreed at the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set worldwide objectives for reducing extreme poverty and hunger, improving health and education, empowering women and ensuring environmental sustainability by 2015.
The 2010 MDGs Report has been designated by the UN General Assembly as an official input to the MDG Summit, which will take place in New York, 20-22 September 2010, to agree on a plan to accelerate global action on the Goals.

New UN-Water policy brief on climate change adaptation and water
UN-Water has recently released the policy brief "Climate Change Adaptation: The Pivotal Role of Water", addressed to practitioners and policymakers of water resources management, sectoral decision-makers as well as those who shape policy regarding climate change. The brief suggests that significant investments and policy shifts are needed and emphasizes that the challenges resulting from climate change impacts on water resources requires adaptation strategies at the local, regional, national and global levels.

WWAP contribution to the High Level International Conference on the Mid-term Review of the Implementation of the Decade for Action "Water for Life" 2005-2015
WWAP attended the High Level International Conference (HLIC) on the Mid-term Review of the Implementation of the Decade for Action "Water for Life" 2005-2015 held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on 8-10 June 2010. The conference gathered about 800 participants from 75 UN member countries, among which heads of governments, scholars, NGO representatives, experts and UN representatives.
