WWAP at the 5th World Water Forum, Istanbul, Turkey - 16-22 March 2009

The World Water Assessment Programme is pleased to host a number of events at the upcoming Fifth World Water Forum, held from March 16th to 22nd in Istanbul, Turkey. The first event, the Launch of the third edition of the World Water Development Report will be held on the opening day of the Form, and we will hold a number of related events throughout the week. On the opening day of the Forum, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, will present the new Report, which builds on the conclusions of the first and second reports, “Water for People, Water for Life” (2003) and “Water: A Shared Responsibility” (2006).

The WWDR, which aims to provide an authoritative assessment of the status of the world’s freshwater resources, is the only report of its kind. It is the result of collaboration and effort among the 26 members of UN-Water, country partners, non-governmental organizations, a technical advisory committee, expert groups, and hundreds of contributions from stakeholders through global public consultations.

One of the key objectives of the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) is to help countries improve their self-assessment capability by building on existing strengths and experiences. WWAP fulfils this mission by assisting countries in preparation of case studies around the world. During this side event, the WWAP Secretariat will present the Case Study Volume, “Facing the Challenges” which accompanies the 3rd edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR-3) and highlight the findings of a wide selection of case studies together with country partners. WWDR-3 Findings and Key Messages Side Event

The official launching session of the 3rd edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR-3), "Water in a Changing World", will take place on March 16, at 17:00-19:00. During this consecutive side event, WWAP gives the opportunity to the Forum’s participants to discuss the contents of the 3rd UN world water development Report with the production team and ask questions about the key messages. This will also be the opportunity to propose subject matter for the next edition of the Report. WWDR-3 Side Publications Series Side Event

The World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) has published a number of Side Publications in parallel with the 3rd edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR-3). These original contributions provide more focused, in-depth information, scientific background knowledge, policy guidelines and interface with other, less conventional water sectors. Selected Side Publications will be presented during this side event, together with partner organisations.
