UN-HABITAT LAUNCHES SECOND PHASE OF VALUES-BASED WATER AND SANITATION EDUCATION PROGRAMME

UN-HABITAT FOCUSES WATER FOR ASIAN CITIES PROGRAMME ON INDIA
Under the Water for Asian Cities Programme (WAC) of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has accorded US$ 20 million to six Indian cities to improve their water supply and sanitation facilities. The cities, all located within the State of Madhya Pradesh, will target the urban poor in order to facilitate achieving the Millennium Development Goal on water and sanitation. Some of the areas being focused on include: pro-poor water governance; water demand management; public awareness; partnerships; and integrated urban environmental sanitation. The ADB has committed US$ 500 million to the urban water and sanitation sector through the WAC Programme. Read more

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT WWAP?
MEETING TO CREATE A WATER COOPERATION FACILITY During the third World Water Forum, UNESCO's Director General, M. Koïchiro Matsuura, made known (PDF format, 18KB) the decision to create a Water Cooperation Facility. This facility would be an alliance of institutions that are active in the management of shared water resources. UNESCO, through its programme dedicated to shared waters, From Potential Conflict to Cooperation Potential (PC-CP) and the World Water Council (WWC) are organizing a meeting for all of the institutions interested in joining this initiative as Facility Partners. The meeting will be held at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, in Delft, The Netherlands, on 25-26 November 2004.

MEETING WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
This past month of July, WWAP officials met with the director of the Water Systems Analysis Group of the University of New Hampshire's Institute for the study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. The aim of this meeting was to discuss the realisation of thematic maps linked to social indicators and extreme events (mainly floods and droughts) for WWAP case studies currently underway.

CASE STUDIES
THAILAND: CASE STUDY TO BE EXPANDED
Following the Chao Phraya River basin case study featured in Water for People, Water for Life, the first edition of the World Water Development Report (WWDR), Thailand has agreed to expand the case study from basin level to country level.

DANUBE RIVER BASIN
The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR),
The international organization created to implement the Danube River Protection Convention, has appointed a focal point to work with WWAP, and will try to contribute to the second World Water Development Report (WWDR II).
FRANCE: FIVE NEW CASE STUDIES
The French Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development intends to implement five additional basin case studies in France. A different aspect of water management will be analysed through the study of each basin, thus water and irrigation, industrial waters, water and agriculture, transboundary water management, hydroelectricity and urban water will be the main topics of these studies.
The Seine Normandy basin case study, which was carried out by the Seine-Normandy Water Agency for the first Water Development Report, Water for People, Water for Life will be maintained with a special emphasis on water needs in urban areas.

LA PLATA BASIN: NOMINATION OF A NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The Intergovernmental Coordinating Committee of the La Plata Basin (CIC) has nominated a new Executive Secretary, M. Helio Macedo-Soares. CIC Member countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

WWAP PARTNERSHIPS
FRIEND/AMIGO WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS PARTNERSHIP WITH WWAP
Representatives of WWAP and of Mesoamerican and Caribbean countries of the FRIEND/AMIGO project participated in a workshop in La Havana (Cuba) from 23 to 25 August. The aim of the meeting was to discuss products developed by FRIEND/AMIGO which could be used in the framework of WWAP's risk management component, such as tools to forecast dry spells on a regional level, extreme events evaluation, and vulnerability maps. FRIEND/AMIGO's project for a new website, and its connection with UNESCO's water portal and the SAGA project (Water Governance Support System) were also discussed.

2ND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TRANSBOUNDARY WATERS MANAGEMENT
The second International Symposium on Transboundary Waters Management will take place in Tucson, Arizona, United States, from 16 to 19 November 2004, under the auspices of WWAP. It is the continuation of the November 2002 symposium, which took place in Monterey, Mexico. New experiences in transboundary water resources management and human resources training in this field will be presented during the event. The first session, dedicated to the theme 'Planning, decision-making and politics', will be presided by WWAP deputy coordinator Carlos Fernandez Jauregui.

FIRST TRAINING SESSIONS FOR WATER RESOURCES MANAGERS
The first training session for water resources managers took place from September 15 to 17 in Pontevedra, under the auspices of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP). The theme was 'Galician rivers: between an energetic benefit and a biological one'. WWAP's deputy coordinator met with the Coruña University's work group during these sessions to discuss the creation of a joint training program in water resources management with WWAP.
