WHAT'S HAPPENING AT WWAP?
PREPARATION WORKSHOP FOR THE SECOND EDITION OF THE WWDR
WWAP held a workshop from 31 March to 2 April at UNESCO headquarters, Paris, to kick off the preparation of the second World Water Development Report (WWDR) to be published in March 2006.
Representatives from WWAP's partner agencies, past and potential case study partners, water experts and special guests were in attendance. The main aim of the status review workshop was to bring together the key players of the second edition of the Report to assess the adopted process and set up a strategy for its production. Topics of discussion included: chapter outlines and content; progress in indicator development; strategies for development of case studies; lessons learned from the first WWDR; and the way forward for the second edition.

- organizing an international symposium on "water as a source of cooperation", to be held in Zaragoza in October 2004; and
- co-producing a documentary with WWAP on integrated water resources management, that would be made by the director of a film nominated for the 2004 Oscars.

MARCH 22 - WORLD WATER DAY 2004: WATER AND DISASTERS
World Water Day 2004, celebrated on March 22, focused on the theme Water and Disasters, both natural and human-made, and called for better preparedness in the face of natural hazards.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), co-author of the chapter of Water for People, Water for Life devoted to managing risks, coordinated the day with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), which also contributed to the chapter.
According to the Report, there were 2,200 water-related disasters worldwide between 1990 and 2001, a full 50% of which were floods. More than 60% of these disasters occurred in Africa and Asia.
