Background
After the World Water Assessment Programme was approved, letters were sent by the United Nations and UNESCO inviting member countries to participate. Many governments have responded. You'll find hereafter the list of countries, organized by regions. Some of them have designated national focal points. Interested groups or individuals who wish to learn more about assessment activities in their region are invited to get in touch with these offices directly.
Some of the countries listed below have an asterisk (*) after their name. This means that they are on record as having already made some pledge or statement regarding water resources management at the Ministerial Conference held during the 2nd World Water Forum in The Hague in March 2000. These targets, pledges and statements are summarized in a document entitled Commitments on Water Security in the 21st Century.
You can also refer to the Water links section of the UNESCO Water Portal, to learn more about national water ministries and other national information.
