Courses on Conflict Prevention and Cooperation in International Water Resources in the South African Developing Community
The pilot courses on Conflict Prevention and Cooperation in International Water Resources in the South African Developing Community were held in November 2002 in Maputo, Mozambique (5-day course) and Cape Town, South Africa (10-day course) respectively. The first had 11 participants form 8 SADC countries, and the latter had 17 participants from 11 SADC countries who have different professional backgrounds.
The specific objectives of the course were:
- to enhance the understanding of conflict transformation and impart negotiation skills
- to enhance insights in Integrated Water Resources Management
- to strengthen regional water diplomacy
The course material for the 5 and 10-day course is the same. The length of the course can be adjusted depending on the needs of the target audience.

The PCCP course material has been used in various educational activities for both, students and professionals, since its first implementation in 2002.
The University of Zimbabwe and the University of the Western Cape integrated the PCCP course material in the course modules of their WaterNet Master in the Integrated Water Resources Management programme and M.SC. programme respectively. It was also used in several training courses for professionals run by the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa and Cap-Net in 2005 and 2006.
