10 years after the Rio Earth Summit, the World Summit on Sustainable Development - Johannesburg Summit 2002 - will bring together tens of thousands of participants, including heads of State, national delegates and leaders from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses and other major groups of civil society. The Summit will focus the world's attention on actions to achieve sustainable development. The goal for freshwater, as defined in the UN Millenium Declaration, is to halve by the year 2015 the proportion of people who do not have access to safe drinking water and to stop the unstainable exploitation of water resources by developing water management.
