Director-General condemns murder of Indian journalist Jagajit Saikia

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today condemned the murder of Jagajit Saikia in India’s State of Assam on 22 November. The murder occurred in an area of Assam that has been prey to unrest.
“The fundamental human right of freedom of expression is essential for democracy and rule of law,” said Koïchiro Matsuura.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today condemned the murders of Pakistani journalists Abdul Razzak Johra, of the Royal TV network, on 3 November and Qari Mohammad Shoaib, of the Azadi and Khabar Kar newspapers, on 8 November. Mr Matsuura also voiced concern over the increasing number of attacks on reporters in the country.

UNESCO Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Majed Bin Ali Al Noami, yesterday signed an agreement paving the way for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Centre for Information and Communication Technology to serve the Arab Region.
