THE RED TOY, ISRAEL

Director's experience
As a young Israeli filmmaker, I am filled with rage surveying the reality of the prolonged Israeli occupation. The Al-Aqsa Intifada has dashed the hopes of both Jews and Arabs, but nevertheless I remain hopeful for the future.
The production took place in utter chaos. Interruptions came from every corner - from security forces who resented our presence, the religious Jewish community angered at such a representation in the film, the local Arab population who saw us as invaders. How tragic that the easiest scene to film was through the surveillance cameras, through which I could observe reality without any interference of my own, like a fly on the stone wall, watching, as though it were a different planet, a city, my city, struggling determinedly to continue with her life.
