Description: The Saganet provides access via the Internet to digital images of the full texts of 13 - 15 Century Icelandic literature. The material consists of the entire range of Icelandic family sagas and it also includes a very large portion of Germanic/Nordic mythology (the Eddas), the history of Norwegian kings, contemporary sagas and tales from the European age of chivalry. A great number of manuscripts contain Icelandic ballads, poetry or epigrams. These Collections are kept in The National and University Library of Iceland, The Árni Magnússon Institute in Iceland and in the Fiske Icelandic Collection at Cornell University. All manuscripts, about 250.000 pages on vellum and paper, and about 153.00 pages of printed editions and translations of the Sagas as well as relevant critical studies published before 1900, are included. The project started on July 1, 1997 and was finished on June 30, 2001. It was made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and support from the government of Iceland, RANNÍS (The Icelandic Research Council) and private companies.

Main language of the collection: Icelandic
    Type of Material: Manuscripts, Books
