Description: Antique Maps of Iceland provides access through the Internet to a digital image of all antique maps of Iceland (older than 1900) that are in the collection of the National and University Library of Iceland. The user can access the maps by category or a search interface. A short historical description in Icelandic and English is available for every map. This is the first retroactive digitisation project in Iceland and it started in 1996 and finished in March 1997. It was done in collaboration with the National Library of Norway and was made possible thanks to a grant from NORDINFO (The Nordic Council for Scientific Information and support from the Icelandic Students Innovation Fund. The National and University Library of Iceland developed and programmed the user interface for the project and did the work involving the maps themselves, such as photographing, historical research, classifying and cataloguing. The photographs were then sent to Norway, where they were converted into digital form.

Main language of the collection: Icelandic
    Type of Material: Maps
