Malcolm explored the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library and brought an individual and interpretive approach to the creation of this site. Taking the end of the millennium as a starting point, he sampled the collections by date, selecting material at 50-year intervals back from the year 2000. He has assembled a fascinating collection of items in all formats - pictures, text, sound and video. They invite the user to make all kinds of exciting connections and discoveries, to assess the 'stories', that historians have told, and construct their own stories about life in New Zealand. Te Waimano was chosen as the name for this website for a number of reasons. Derived from the Maori words 'wai' meaning water and 'mano' meaning a very large number, or one thousand, Te Waimano may be translated as 'many waters' or 'a thousand waters'. Having launched this website to mark the beginning of a new era, and to reflect upon our historical past, we have interpreted Te Waimano as the 'waters of the millennium'. Main language of the collection: English, Maori Type of Material: Manuscripts, Photographs, Printed Documents |
