The portrait collection was started in 1743 when the Amsterdam merchant Gerard van Papenbroeck bequeathed fifty portraits of Learned and Famous Men to the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. Now, more than 250 years later, the collection consists of almost 500 portraits from professors and scientists mostly connected with the University of Amsterdam. In this virtual portrait gallery the complete collection has been brought together. The gallery offers the unique possibility to see all of the portraits, a majority of which are not publicly displayed. The database and interface are in Dutch.
