These statistics are neither definitive nor exhaustive when it comes to assessing the number of violations which occurred in 1997. Rather they represent the number of incidents reported by the members of the IFEX Clearing-House. There are many places in the world where violations go unreported. However, these statistics give a good approximation of the difficulties that journalists, writers and others face in their lives.
