| Project Description |

In coordination with the UNESCO Science Sector, the objective of the
project is to launch a network of Information Centres in Central Asian
countries for research and mitigation of the regions' ecological problems.
After the meeting of the representatives of the UNESCO Science Sector with the concerned Central Asian institutions in Almaty, September 1998, applications were provided by scientific bodies in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan to become national branches of the UIC for ecological problems. A prototype of bibliographical system was created for regions of Kazakhstan. The main office has been equipped with computer equipment and a local area network established. An EcoNet Web Site has been set up on the Intranet of the Institute and will soon be available online. It features discussion materials, prepared for publication, opinions of scientists, specialists and government officials. Other activities of the Centre will include: the establishment of a bibliography on ecology in the region, a comprehensive database of ecological projects in Central Asia, a training course recommending computer based tools for ecological disasters and mitigation research and the use of an E-mail discussion group between experts. This will result in a methodology for ecological damage assessment and strategies for the mitigation of ecological disasters in Central Asia.
Problems to be tackled:
The former Nuclear testing site, closed in 1991, was inherited by Kazakstan and continues to threaten the environment and the lives and health of the regions’ people.
Information will also go towards the establishment of a New Water Ethic. This will particularly focus on irrigation in rivers leading to the Aral Sea and other trans-boundary waters.
The rising levels of the Caspian Sea have far-reaching ecological, social and economic implications.
