  Project Description

UNESCO designed and moderated the joined CIDA-FAO-IDRC-ITU-UNESCO Workshop on Multisectoral Rural Development Through Telematics and Telecentres at the Global Knowledge '97 Conference organised by the Government of Canada and the World Bank. Central Asia was represented by Mr Nurlan Sakipov, the President of Kazakstan Telecommunication (KATELCO) who presented the project on the Rural Satellite Network and by Mr Karibaev, Administration of the President of Kyrgyzstan.

Presentations, demonstrations, panels and debates gave a comprehensive picture of opportunities and challenges facing the development of telematics services for rural communities and marginalised groups. The session provided a synthesis of the most recent methodologies and experiences, including NGOs and Universities from Africa, Asia and Latin America, drawing conclusions for practical actions and future initiatives.
