  Project Description
    
HeritageNet has two principle goals;

I. To contribute to the promotion of culture and art of Central Asia world-wide through the development of Web sites, CD-ROM on cultural heritage of Central Asia and virtual exhibition of heritage of Central Asia.

II. To enhance expertise pertinent to the research and preservation of Central Asian culture and art through the use of telematics applications by means of email discussion groups, distance education training course on preservation of cultural heritage in arm conflicts, training courses on 3-D modeling and GIS techniques, and the development of electronic cataloguing systems at the National Museums and in Fine Art Museums.

We hope that the project will contribute to accomplishing the following objectives:

-to boost scientific research and the exchange of expertise on Central Asian cultural and natural treasures;

-to establish visibility of the target groups in Central Asia on the Internet;

-to ensure constant supply of first-hand information and certified

data on Central Asian culture and art;

-to transfer skills for the information society to cultural and natural scientists both in the EU and in Central Asia;

-to create a positive and attractive image of the region and promote cultural tourism in Central Asia;

-to promote better understanding of each other's cultures in Western Europe and Central Asia;

-to promote international cooperation-operation and to facilitate the integration of Central Asia into the world community;

-to make materials accumulated at the HeritageNet commercially available through partnering with publishing houses and tourist agencies.

  How to Participate
    
Scientific and research institutes, museums, galleries, libraries, universities and the business community are invited to develop professional exchange and their visibility on the Internet in the framework of the HeritageNet. Those cultural institutions, which have images and written materials that they wish to digitize and present on the Web should contact Sergey Karpov, UNESCO Almaty Office. In addition, this important project will help develop cultural tourism, publishing, and CD-ROM production so interested parties should consider participating. Interested parties must be prepared to provide their own income for projects they wish to develop.
