Project Description

The Virtual Laboratory Consortium is an international collaboration between the National Nuclear Centre (NNC) of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Los Almas National Laboratory (LANL) of the USA.
Virtual Laboratory means that scientists worldwide can input at various stages of the research providing the benefits of shared experience and knowledge where the NNC lacks the resource potential to carry out all the research itself. Telematics applications enable this remote collaboration capacity which provide the possibility of help in data processing and analysis, software and hardware contributions.
The pilot project in 1997 looked at the migration of radionucleids in biological chains in areas adjusted to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. UNESCO funded the training of scientists, the provision of the equipment and advisory services. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology was applied to the management, analysis and visualization of Radioecology and Nuclear Waste Management data.
The details for the proof of principle for the Virtual Laboratory were:
- The specialists from Kazakhstan sent, via the Internet, the strontium and plutonium contamination data to Los Alamos.
- This data were plotted (through its coordinates-ordinates) onto maps of the area (GIS), in Los Alamos
- Risk calculations were performed on the data.
- These results were sent back to Kazakhstan, via the Internet.
UNESCO is now complementing and expanding the possibilities of the Virtual Laboratory through the establishment of the network of information centres on ecological problems in Central Asia, a joint project with the science sector.

The Virtual Laboratory Web Site at the FIMAD server was established to allow virtual collaboration between the Los Alamos Laboratory and the National Nuclear Centre providing formatted data exchange from each. The training of specialists was undertaken in Los Alamos.
Thanks to the experiences of this project a methodology on how to set up the Virtual Laboratories was drawn up.
Following the visit of Mr. Queau, Director for Informatics and Information, UNESCO, to the Nuclear Centre, it was decided to extend the Laboratory to the Central Asian Environmental Monitoring Network.

How to Participate

Virtual Laboratory has designed a Web Site which provides information on its’ goals, possibilities and preliminary achievements so as to attract a wider circle of scientists interested in collaborating. Any scientist or research group interested in the collaborative research at the NNC should get in contact with one of the specialists mentioned above. It is possible to contribute to the Consortium with scientific expertise, equipment or data analysis via the Web Site.
