To help Indonesian democratisation process UNESCO will hold a Seminar in Jakarta from 23-24 March 1999. The Seminar is a result of UNESCO on going activities to revise the Indonesian press laws. Both the media community and the Indonesian Minister of Information, T.M.K. Yunus, expressed their concerns about the immediate need for public servants and the Indonesian media to understand each other's functions in building a democratic society. In response to this need UNESCO mobilised financial support from the Canadian International Agency for Development (CIDA) to hold a seminar.

Co-organised by the Indonesia National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and professional media organizations the Seminar will discuss number of issues ranging from 'Publics’ Right to Know and Public Authorities" Obligations to Editorial Independence and Representative Democracy.

The President of Indonesia, B.J. Habibi, will inaugurate the Seminar. Nearly150 participants including parliamentarians, senior government officials, provincial governors, editors, publishers, senior journalists and representatives of professional media organisations will attend the two-day seminar.
