This initiative can only work if the global media cooperates. The two top editorial positions in our newspaper are both held by women, but nevertheless we think it important to give the job to a junior editor for the day. We know she can do it, and will benefit from the experience. Why should it be humiliating? (see comment below from Raquel Roca) Why not a challenge? Once done, and done well, it will surely empower women journalists to reach for the top. In my opinion all the Beijing and other declarations in the world won't help women to attain their goals unless they fight for them themselves. Women must simply continue to empower themselves, and if it means more work, harder work, then so be it. No one will give it to us unless we fight for it.So from me a challenge to all the world's male editors/media chiefs: give the reins to women for the day, and if they do it well, move over!

I find it absurd that women be at key media posts on March 8. Giving women editorial control just for one day is humiliating. In my mind, support for women to hold key posts in the media should go beyond the one day initiative . It should be on-going ! Instead of suggesting women work even more on March 8, I suggest women rest, or go on strike, and show to their colleagues the importance of their work. Shame on you UNESCO.

hombres y mujeres.
I am the director of "Trabajadora" (Working Woman) a magazine edited by the Woman’s Secretariat of the union "Comisiones Obreras." It is the only magazine in Spain that covers the issues of working women. The writing and editing is done by women and together we support this initiative. Although the women of today have access to the information society they do not yet hold positions of power. The information offered in by the media does not reflect the reality of men or women.

Oriana, http://www.nua.com
