Reasons of Importance: It is a comprehensive collection of Canadian children's books i.e. books for children up to age 16 which are written or illustrated by Canadians, whether published in Canada or abroad, and books dealing with Canada, whether published in Canada or abroad. The earliest books date from the nineteenth century. Since 1953, when publishers were required by the law to deposit 2 copies of their publications with the National Library, the collection is almost 100% complete.
Condition: Good
Preservation Needs: The bulk of the childrens trade collection is
housed in closed stacks in the third basement
of the National Library. A third of the books
are in a locked room; the rest are less secure
and are accessible to those in the building
with stack passes. The collection is separate
from the Services office area which is on the
fourth floor of the building. Environmental
conditions are the same as in the general
stacks. Twice a year a selection of books is
sent to the Conservation Treatment Labs for
preservation and restoration treatment
