1. Basic principles

The description of periodicals is similar to that of monographs, but there are several differences. They consist in:

  1. necessity to add new statements to the bibliographic description;
  2. the fact that individual numbers of periodicals form annual sets and the annual sets represent the title;
  3. the fact that the individual issue of a periodical consists of articles; the reader is usually interested in a concrete article

The concrete application of the DOBM format for periodicals has the name nkp//manuscript 2.3.

 

2. Concrete application of the DOBM format for newspapers and journals

2.1. Categories of DOBM files

The metadata files are divided into six categories:

  1. BIBLDESCR - (Bibliographic Description)
  2. Bibliographic description of a periodical contains cataloguing data about the periodical. A significant reference is made from here to the file of the TECHDESCR category as well as to the file of the CONTENTSDESCR category.

  3. TECHDESCR (Technical Description)
  4. This file contains the description of the digitization process.

  5. CONTENTSDESCR (Contents Description)
  6. This file represents the periodical as a whole. It consists of a group of annual sets. From this file significant references to the files of the VOLUME category are made. These enable the user quick access to a concrete annual set.

  7. VOLUME (Volume)
  8. This file represents one annual set. From these files significant references to the files of the ISSUE category or PAGE category are made. These files enable the user quick access to a concrete issue of a periodical.

  9. ISSUE (Issue)
  10. This file represents one issue. It can contain - besides the identification of this issue - also a list of articles. This file contains also significant references to individual pages (to the files of the PAGE category.

  11. PAGE (Page)

This file represents one page of a periodical. It contains a preview image; it can contain also a description of the page, but not the description of individual articles It contains references to data files of digital copies divided into categories on the basis of the image quality level applied.

3. The structure of the BIBLDESCR file

The file of the BIBLDESCR category is the root of the tree structure and it covers the digital copy of a book or of a periodical (newspaper, journal) as a whole. The BIBLDESCR category contains bibliographic data about the document. The list of categories of the bibliographic description suitable for periodicals is given below:

AACR2 - this marks the statements whose origin is in the AACR2 standard
doc - the values of the statements are in the language of the described document
descr - the values of the statements are in English or in the cataloguing language

4. The structure of the TECHDESCR file

The file of the TECHDESCR category contains technical information about how the original was digitized: description of technological devices used, original resolution, or information about intermediate formats used for the production of final digital data files. The TECHDESCR category contains this information in one category labelled as shown below:

Technical data about digitization

This file concerns the periodical as a whole, but it can describe also specific methods used for digitization of various annual sets.

 

5. The structure of the CONTENTSDESCR file

The files of CONTENTDESCR category represent a list of annual sets of a periodical title. They contain the statements as follows:

Identification of contents (mandatory)

It identifies a group of annual sets. It contains:

  • VOLUMENUMB (TYPE=NUMBER)
    Volume Number
Numbering of the annual set This category gives the interval of annual sets of which this set consists, it is mandatory
  • DATATION (TYPE=DATE)
    Date of Publication
Date of publication This category gives the interval of time that this set covers, it is mandatory.

Defects descr

This statement informs in the text form about the annual sets missing. It should provide information about the fact, whether the periodical for the period of time concerned is complete or not.

 

6. The structure of the VOLUME files

The file of the VOLUME category represents one annual set. It contains the statements as follows:

Identification of the annual set/volume (mandatory)

No two annual sets of the same periodical title can have the same number and date of publication.
