The above scheme shows how the digital copy is produced, stored, and accessed:

The General Metadata Format
is defined by DOBM DTD and DOBMENT DTD on the SGML platform as well as by other related rules. It is described in our document called Digitization of Old Books, Manuscripts, and Other Documents: The Format for Storage of Metadata, Version 2.1.

The Concrete Application of the Format
is defined by a concrete DOBMENT SGML file for a type of documents; it is also described and explained in a specification document.

The Metadata Input
concerns the problems how to write the descriptive metadata so that they may be easily structured in the DOBM format.

The Metadata Structuring
is the generation of the DOBM storage structure.
The Data Capture
is the basic data production by digitization devices (cameras, scanners, sound digitizers, etc.)

The Data Processing
is further work with digital files, i. e. their optimizing and conversion into appropriate data formats of various quality levels as recommended.
The Merging of Metadata
with Data is the creation of the whole digital document.
The Storage of the Digital Copy
is its writing on storage media.
The Basic Access
is access through generally available tools, especially the WWW browsers.
The Sophisticated Access
is access through special software able to make use of metadata descriptions and enabling further work with data and metadata.

For more simplicity, examples referenced from this page concern mostly digital copies of manuscripts.
