1. Basic principles

Descriptions of sound recordings are based on existing concrete applications and they can be made in a similar manner. On this basis, the DOBM format NKP//MANUSCRIPT 2.1 for manuscripts and old printed books is adapted for the description of sound recordings. See Literature.

Concrete application of the DOBM format for sound recordings - NKP//MANUSCRIPT 2.4

2. Categories of DOBM files

The files with metadata are divided into four categories:

  1. BIBLDESCR - (Bibliographic Description) File with bibliographic description of the work. From this file, a significant reference is made to the file of the TECHDESCR category as well as to the file of the WORK category.
  2. TECHDESCR (Technical Description) - File with description of the digitization process.
  3. WORK (Work) - File representing the sound work. It can contain its contents. From this file, significant references are made to individual parts of the work (files of the PART category).
  4. PART (Part) - File representing one part of the sound recording (part of a symphony, song, volume, variation, ...) It contains the description of the part and references to data files of digital copies divided into categories defined by their quality, given by the data format or the compression ratio.

3. Structure of the BIBLDESCR file

The file of the BIBLDESCR category is the root of the tree structure and it covers the digital copy of the work. The BIBLDESCR category contains the bibliographic record. The list of the categories of this record is given below:

Each item has its own label (derived from its English name) and the name (which can have national forms).

AACR2 - marks the items whose original is in the AACR2
description - the contents of items are in English or in the language of the cataloguing language
doc - the contents of the items are in the language of the document

4. Structure of the TECHDESCR file

The file of the TECHDESCR category contains technical information about how the original was digitized: description of technological devices used, original resolution, or information about intermediate formats used for the production of final digital data files. The TECHDESCR category contains this information in one category labelled as shown below:

CAPTURE Capturing Data   Technical data about digitization

5. Structure of the WORK files

The files of the WORK category represent the sound recording as a whole (symphony, collections of songs, etc.) It contains no lower metadata categories.

6. Structure of the PART files

The files of the PART category represent the sound recording of one part of the work (part of a symphony, song, variation, etc.)

It contains the mandatory category labelled:

PARTID     Part identification (its title, numbering, ...)       doc

The files of the PART category reference top individual digital sound files of individual parts of the work. Basically, two quality levels/categories can be distinguished:

CDQ    Audio CD Quality Sound             (WAV format)

INTERNETQ   Internet Quality Sound Internet quality file (MPEG3 format recommended, RM Real Audio possible); the compression ratio chosen with reference to targeted audience

Other audio formats can be used for these two quality levels if considered appropriate.

7. Other

If larger or/and more structured descriptions of individual parts of the work are requested, additional categories can be defined following the general DOBM rules as stated in (2).
