French colonial building restored as traditional crafts school
The project falls within the Municipality of Tunis' larger programme "Oukalas Project" for the improvement of the social and urban environment of the city. By rehabilitating this colonial period building (15 classrooms on 3 stories) and establishing a school for traditional crafts in it an important objective of the local authorities' programme. The project will be carried out in conjunction with "Association Sauvegarde de la Médina", using local architects and labour.
The main target group is adolescents of both sexes, and the project supports the cultural dimension of development, as well as the physical rehabilitation of the historic Medina. Certain works (painting, wood-working) are of quality, and accordingly the project has a significant training component.
Without initiatives that touch education and traditional crafts, the medinas risk loss of population and severe economic decline, and by its involvement in this kind of cultural heritage project, UNESCO wishes to draw attention to genuinely revitalizing initiatives.
- architectural monument restored
- cultural training and education center created
- contribution to revitalisation of old medina
- old medinas become more and more deserted and therefore risk decay
- empowerment of young people through training and job creation
- revitalisation of traditional handicrafts
