Conservation onLine CoOL, a project of the Preservation Department
of Stanford University Libraries, is a full text library of conservation
information, covering a wide spectrum of topics of interest to those involved
with the conservation of library, archives and museum materials. The
Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI)
CCI's mandate is to promote the proper care and preservation of Canada's
moveable cultural property, and to advance the practice, science, and technology
of conservation. To execute this mandate, CCI staff focus on providing
services and on carrying out an active research program, based on a commitment
to excellence, relevance, and timeliness.

of Cultural Property
The National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property (NIC)
serves as a national forum for conservation and preservation activities
in the United States. It provides national leadership and coordination
to promote and facilitate the conservation and preservation of the nation's
heritage, including works of art, anthropological artifacts, documents,
historic objects, architecture and natural science specimens. The institute's
members include the nation's leading museums, libraries, archives, historic
preservation organizations and historical societies as well as conservation
and preservation organizations. The institute assists the efforts of its
diverse membership and provides coordination by identifying issues and
needs, formulating strategies and solutions, and initiating programs and
projects. In cooperation with its membership and affiliated organizations,
the institute works to advance the following goals: increase public awareness
of the need to preserve our nation's heritage; make ongoing care and conservation
a fundamental priority of historic preservation organizations, libraries
and archives, museums, and historical societies; and coordinate conservation
and preservation activities.

Research Institute of Cultural Properties
The Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties was originally
founded as the Institute of Art Research in 1930 by the bequest of the
late Viscount KURODA Seiki, former president of the Academy of Art. This
Institute of Art Research was reorganized in 1952 as the Tokyo National
Research Institute of Cultural Properties with the departments of Fine
Arts, Performing Arts, Conservation Science and General Affairs. In 1973,
the Department of Restoration Techniques was established, in 1977 the Department
of Archives, and in 1993 the Division of International Cooperation for
Conservation, which was transformed into the Japan Center for International
Cooperation in Conservation in 1995 thus expanding the Institute to its
present scale.

for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (UKIC)
UKIC is the representative body for professional conservators and restorers
in private and institutional practice in the UK. It started as a regional
group of the International Institute for Conservation in 1958 and became
autonomous in 1979. UKIC members are conservators, restorers and conservation
scientists working in disciplines including applied art, archaeology, archives,
botany, industrial archaeology, paintings, paper, sculpture and zoology.
They also include many who have a professional, business or personal interest
in conservation.

of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM)
The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration
of Cultural Property (ICCROM) is an intergovernmental organization (IGO)
that was created by UNESCO in 1956 and established in Rome in 1959. It
currently has 93 Member States, and various associate institutions. ICCROM's
mandate is to create or improve conditions for the effective conservation
of cultural heritage resources worldwide. As the only autonomous IGO dealing
with all types of heritage both movable and immovable - ICCROM takes a
practical, technical approach to its task. With its close links to the
U.N. family, its ultimate goal is to promote world peace; indeed, heritage
conservation fosters a sense of cultural identity, which is essential for
development and social stability.

The Art Restoration for Cultural Heritage Foundation (ARCH) is a non-profit
organization that since 1991 has been working to protect, restore and promote
the magnificent cultural heritage of Eastern and Central Europe, where
so much of this cultural devastation has occurred that it has been identified
as a crisis area.
