  Objectives

To improve the quality of journalism and the mass media in Kazakhstan. To promote research in the field of communication and mass media in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. To upgrade skills in journalism and related disciplines.

  Activities

Equipment (radio studio and S-VHS) purchased and installed. A new production studio renovated and completed. Magazine subscriptions for the reference library provided. UNESCO ORBICOM Chair on Communication was established in May 1996.

91% The project originated with the Central Asian Regional Workshop for Mass Communication Researchers held at Kazak University, October 1994 under Regular Programme (RP) activities. Staff exchange with the Philippine University College of Mass Communication. Publication of "A Journal of Central Asian Media Studies" was also supported through RP funds. Project completed. Evaluation pending.

  Objectives

To identify current knowledge, attitudes and behaviour (KAB) and information needs of target groups and the social, economic and cultural factors determining their lifestyle, and also assess effective and appropriate channels of communication for identifeid high risk population groups
To improve the capacity and capability of the Republican and Karaganda Health and HIV/AIDS centres, drug rehabilitation centres and relevant NGO's to adapt/develop (design, pre-test and produce) and disseminate IEC materials and formulate IEC strategy.
To improve and adapt school curriculum on drug and alcohol abuse, HIV/AIDS and STD for 4-11 grade and to develop lesson plans.
To develop, test and implement a long-term intensive IEC campaign.

  Activities

Workshops held for mass media, heatlh educators on effective information dissemination on issues like HIV/AIDS, drugs and alcohol problems. Baseline research conducted, and report produced. Two video spots developed; one on Condom promotion and one against alcohol abuse. Workshop on IEC strategy development and material production, peer-to-peer and curriculum development in preparation for February, March 1998. Development of IEC Campaign and information materials (video spots, brochures, pamphlets, posters, radio spots etc.).
