Objectives

To establish a network of highly skilled freedom of expression NGOs in all regions/countries of the developing world with the capacity to conduct effective campaigns to defend freedom of expression and democratic rights.
To support the development of modern communications technologies around the world so they can be effectively used in campaigning on behalf of freedom of expression.
To provide freedom of expression information and documentation in international and indigenous languages by using communications technologies such as electronic mail and the Internet so that it can be made available to human rights groups and the general public throughout the world.

 

Activities

Provide to eight freedom of expression NGOs with three days of training workshops to be held in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Provide personalised hands-on instruction for eight developing country groups in the use of new communications technologies. Develop new electronic mail communication links with 200 NGOs, the media, decision-makers, educators, and the general public in the South, and to delivery to them vital information aimed at defending free expression. Make the IFEX Internet site - the most comprehensive site of its kind in the world - sponsor a one-day meeting between IFEX developing country groups and programme officers from some of the world's leading development and funding organizations.
