THE BENEDICTINE MUSEUM OF MONT FEBE OR

SMALL MUSEUM OF CAMEROUNESE ART OF MONT FEBE

The Benedictine Fathers arrived in Cameroun in 1932. For a long time they took care of the Great Seminar of MVOI.YE and OTELE.

Just after he arrived in Cameroun in 1954 Farther Luitfrid MARFU'T started to get interested in Camerounese art. This is when he decided to start a collection in order toget closer to this civilization. At first he was struck by the peculiar style of ABBIAS; they will be the first part of his collection. There are a bind of fruit shell; on the convex part of which marvellous sculptures of a rare delicacy showing animals, men and everyday life scenaries appear. All this makes an extraordinary totemisme in the relations between the men and the nature which is the realexpression of the way people of this area look at the universe. There was even a game made out of ABBIAS, which is no longer existing today. It was a game of'chance in which one won or lost according to the totem shown on the Abbia pawn The museum has been located in the present building since 1964, and the collection has grown.
