TTHE MASK (End)2
he use of masks during initiation ceremonies was quite different. Young men were gathered togelher away from the village in a remote place where they were trained to become physically and morally mature. These young men were taught respect towards social laws and religious secrets. The initiator sometimes appeared in a mask representing the spirit meant to educate other men. Sometimes the whole members of the village were gathered for the final ceremonies. during which some dances were performed with the masks. At that very time the sense of initiation is reminded to the initiates. And so the adolescence dies out and the adult's life starts. The significance given to masks nowadays is that they are considered as traditional art tools. They can be perceived through specimens presented in this book; be they curved masks, black velvet masks or costume; wooden mask, fibre mask. ivory mask or bronze mask.
