UNESCO launches Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists

UNESCO recently published the English version of Story-based inquiry: a manual for investigative journalists, a useful guide for journalists on how to best exercise investigative journalism. The manual was firstly launched in Arabic by UNESCO and the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) at the second ARIJ conference in Amman in 2009. Since then it has been used by many journalists' training organizations and introduced into curricula of university journalism programmes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

UNESCO's IPDC funds radio facilities for University of Guyana

Students of the University of Guyana Center for Communication Studies (UGCCS) now have a learning laboratory to develop their skills in radio writing and production. UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) funded the installation of radio studio facilities at UGCCS.

UNESCO presents Assessment of Media Development in Ecuador to National Assembly

UNESCO publications focus on quality of Brazilian media

UNESCO's Brasilia Office has launched four publications in the Communication and Information Debates series. The output of a study developed in cooperation with the Brazilian National Net of Press Observatories (Renoi), the four titles stress the need for quality indicators for Brazilian media companies.

A seminar in Brasilia debated the draft Media Sector Supplement, a tool that is being developed under the coordination of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to diagnose corporate responsibility of media companies. UNESCO's Office in Brasilia co-organized the event, in cooperation with its partners.

A multi-stakeholder meeting was held in Brasilia on 14 October to launch the process of assessing the media situation in Brazil using UNESCO's Media Development Indicators. The meeting brought together representatives of the authorities, civil society, media associations and academics to discuss the modalities of the application of the indicators.

UNESCO presents method to assess Nepal's media landscape

Media professionals in Nepal welcomed the planned assessment of the country's media landscape, when they met last September in Kathmandu. The assessment would use UNESCO's Media Development Indicators (MDI), a system designed to identify the key characteristics of a media environment in which freedom of expression, independence and pluralism of the media can flourish and, in return, the media can contribute to the democratisation process.

UNESCO and the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (ALAIC) signed an agreement in the framework of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). The restructuring of the ALAIC website and production of the Latin American Journal of Communication Science are among the activities to be implemented under this agreement.
