In such cases, the carrier material first turns brown and then becomes
brittle. Under unfavourable climatic conditions, this can lead to
perforation of the paper fibres. The Nürnberg map (1541), an important
early cartographic document, is an example of such damage, furthermore
the paper fibres have become brittle as a result of the use of glues
and resin stains.
