Improper and excessive use of documents with their structures weakened still further by unfavourable climatic conditions results in mechanical damage to many valuable holdings. The example shows an atlas folio of the Netherlands from the 50 volume atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem (1662-1678), one of the most important cartographic compendia of its day.
