The greatest risk to magnetic tapes results from the instability of the chemical binders. A considerable number of video and audio tapes, especially those produced during the 1970’s and 80’s, are suffering from pigment binder hydrolysis. Atmospheric moisture is absorbed by the pigment binder causing the polymer to hydrolyse and loose its binding properties.
