Unfortunately, experience and research over the last ten years have shown that the succeeding material used as film base, consisting of cellulose acetate, is also inherently unstable: Film archives located in damp and hot climate zones have learned to recognise the decay of acetate films which can be noticed from the pungent smell of vinegar (vinegar syndrome).
