Unfortunately,
experience and research over the last ten years have shown that
the succeeding material used as film base, consisting of cellulose
acetate, is also inherently unstable: Film archives located in damp
and hot climate zones have learned to recognise the decay of acetate
films which can be noticed from the pungent smell of vinegar (vinegar
syndrome). The examples show decomposed nitrofilms.
