In a meeting held in Paris in March 2000, the Group issued the following statement:
"The UNESCO Advisory Group on Press Freedom commends the Organisation's approach in assisting independent news media in post-conflict zones, such as the Balkans, Great Lakes region of Africa, Cambodia and East Timor. That approach consists of identifying and fostering local independent broadcast and print press where they already exist and in helping them to come into being where they do not."
"We are heartened that UNESCO has shared the view of the news media themselves that nothing should be imposed from the outside by external powers or agencies."
