Call for Application: Trainers for Journalism Clinic 2021 at UNTL

The National University of Timor-Leste (Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e, UNTL) and UNESCO Office Jakarta, with the Neatherlands’ support of the Netherlands Funds-in-Trust project, will organize a Journalism Clinic for students of Department of Social Communication.  

Under the Faculty of Social Sciences, The Department of Social Communication was established in 2008 with aim to educate Timor-Leste’s future journalists to enter the industry as qualified professionals, and, thus, improve the quality of journalism in Timor-Leste.

The Journalism Clinic is an intensive extracurricular practical journalism writing programme focusing on news writing with structured classes mentored by Timor-Leste’s senior editors and journalists. The programme aims to improve the news writing ability in Tetum of the students of Social Communication to enter the media industry with practical writing experience, making them job-ready.  

During the 6-week course, each trainer will meet at least twice a week with a group of no more than 12 students to have a mentoring class to improve their news writing quality in Tetum language.

Who are we looking for:  

Up to five trainers who are passionate about improving journalism education and standard in Timor-Leste and is willing to commit their time for the entire 6-week of the journalism clinic.

Deliverables:

1. A 6-week Teaching Plan or syllabus (in Tetum with translation in Indonesian or English) which must include, at the minimum, the following information:  

a. The Objective of the course;
b. Topics to be covered over the 6 weeks;
c. Pre-training assessment for the students administer at the start of the course;
d. Post-training assessment for the students at the end of the course;
e. List of resources.

2. Mid-term (3-week) Progress Report (in Indonesian or English)
3. Final Narrative Report (in Indonesian or English) with the lesson learned and recommendations for future journalism clinic, a summary of the students’ assessment, and a personalized short story/news article of the experience that is suitable to be published.
 
Qualifications:

  1. Based in Dili or surrounding area;
  2. Degree or equivalent professional experience in communications, journalism, humanities, or related field;
  3. At least five years of working experience in media organization in Timor-Leste, with a proven record of competency in the news writing in Tetum;
  4. Experience in designing a training curriculum/module, particularly on news writing, is an advantage;
  5. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, in Tetum and working level of English/Indonesian;
