Central American project examines policy for Education for Sustainable Development

A new project, aimed at the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA), aims to improve the development of policies to further Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As signatories of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) declaration, the SICA countries understand the potential of ESD in developing the capacity of every citizen to confront major sustainability challenges and the effects of climate change.

The project has two main lines of action: 1) support the development of a public policy on ESD in Costa Rica, and 2) capacity development for decisions makers in the ministries of education (and in some cases, ministries of the environment) to enable them to promote and design ESD policies in their countries.

In Costa Rica, UNESCO supported the Ministry of Public Education through the organization of a broad consultative process involving more than 5000 stakeholders. Currently, UNESCO also supports the development of the action plan and management model of the ESD policy.

At regional level, UNESCO, together with the Earth Charter and  the UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC:Learn), organized a blended learning course on ESD policy development for teams of decision makers from 8 countries. As a result of this course, each team had to develop an action plan for ESD policy development in the context of their country and draft a basic text of an ESD policy, as a basis for discussion with the authorities in their countries. In some countries, UNESCO will be provided targeted support to initiate the ESD policy development.
